Can gay couples get married in a church

The Church of England and Church in Wales sought exemption from the law, and as a result it is not legally possible for them to celebrate same-sex marriages. Being invited to the wedding is often a cause for joy, but for many Catholics, being invited to a same-sex wedding can precipitate a deep internal conflict.

Liberals in the Church of England note that there are other Anglican churches worldwide, including the Episcopal Church in the USA, and the Scottish Episcopal Church, which already do celebrate same-sex marriages. The Church of England is the state church in England.

Since it has been possible for same sex couples in civil partnerships to convert their relationships to marriages. Although same-sex marriage legislation has changed, it remains the case that it is not legally possible for same-sex couples to marry in the Church of England.

It would not be possible for them to legally celebrate same-sex marriages until such time as their Canon Law was changed. The Church of England has not prevented its clergy from entering into civil partnerships as long as they are celibate.

The guidance has not been superseded by any more recent documents. However, since the passage of the Marriages Same Sex Couples Actsome Church of England clergy have married their same-sex spouses. They offer friendship, prayer and support before and after a wedding, whether it is a church wedding or not.

Churches are so much more than a wedding venue. InRevd Jeremy Pemberton, who had married his same-sex partner, was disciplined by the Church of England and prevented from taking up a post as an NHS healthcare chaplain in Nottinghamshire.

In Revd Andrew Foreshew-Cain said he knew of between 20 and 25 Church of England clergy in same-sex marriages, some of whom had converted their civil partnerships.
